TYSONS, VA (October 24, 2017) — Tysons Partnership announced that its second annual TysonsCares Season of Giving campaign generated over $55,000 in total donations throughout a two-month long series of community events and fundraising initiatives. The proceeds from the campaign were distributed through local nonprofit and charity organizations supporting food, shelter and clothing initiatives, including Food for Others, Second Story, and The Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools.
Initially launched in 2016, TysonsCares Season of Giving is an annual charity campaign produced by Tysons Partnership that facilitates collaboration between the local businesses, government entities, residents and nonprofits to raise awareness and provide vital resources to community members in need.
“We seek to foster an engaged community and lend a helping hand to our community members who are in need,” said Dan Mackesey, Chairman of Tysons Partnership’s Community Responsibility Council, and Partner at Womble Carlyle. “We do not have the resources to do it on our own, so we partner with businesses, government, charitable organizations and individuals.”
This year’s TysonsCares Season of Giving kicked off in September, with the launch of the Shoes4Kids initiative: a shoe donation drive benefiting students enrolled in financial aid programs throughout eight local Fairfax County elementary schools. The drive collected over 1,000 pairs of new shoes, more than double the collection total from the 2016 campaign.
The Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools is a founding partner of the Shoes4Kids campaign and has worked closely with Tysons Partnership to serve the needs of Fairfax County students living in poverty.
“We are so pleased to continue the Shoes4Kids collaboration with the Tysons Partnership! Community partners like this are invaluable to FCPS and our 52,000 students who live in poverty,” said Elizabeth Murphy, Executive Director of the Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools. “To have the contributions more than double in the second year is just fantastic, and we can’t wait to see what happens in Year Three!”
Tysons Tailgate, the Season of Giving campaign’s signature public event, was held September 28 on Valo Park’s campus and attracted over 500 attendees. The outdoor, tailgate themed event featured live music, lawn games, food trucks, and charity raffles, with proceeds benefitting Second Story (formerly Alternative House), a local youth homeless shelter.
“The ways I see our community come together time and time again, never ceases to amaze me,” stated Judith Dittman, CEO of Second Story. “The amount of exposure, funds raised, and friendships formed in one night at the Tysons Tailgate will further fuel our drive to end youth homelessness in Northern Virginia, and for that, we are extremely grateful.”
Over 400 runners circled Tysons Corner Center at the September 9 Food for Others Tysons 5K. The fourth annual race supported fundraising and food donations for Food for Others, a local food bank that distributes over 1,000 free meals a day to local families in need.
While Tysons is driven by booming urban and economic development, the surrounding region is home to thousands of families living in poverty and without access to basic necessities, including school supplies and clothing.
Mackesey underscored the collaborative efforts and outpour of support on behalf of members of Tysons Partnership, Fairfax County and the local business and residential communities as the key driver behind the Season of Giving.
“People are hungry to build community and give back, and we provide a vehicle to fulfill those needs, said Mackesey. “The Season of Giving was successful because of the enthusiastic participation of so many and I am humbled to be associated with their example.”
