TYSONS, VA — The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a future mixed-use development called The Mile in Tysons on Tuesday, July 16. The 3-million-square-foot development is slated to have residential buildings, a central park, and office, hotel and retail uses.

The Mile will revamp an existing 38-acre office park between Westbranch Drive, Jones Branch Drive and Westpark Drive, about a half mile from the Tysons Corner Metro station. The 10 new buildings will be spaced out between eight blocks. Five of the buildings will be residential and another four will be set aside for either residential, office, hotel or retail uses. The last building will be a retail kiosk for the planned park.

The five-acre park has been named Signature Park. It will feature an open lawn, performance stage, trail for pedestrians and bicyclists, children's play area, seating and tables, a bikeshare station and food pavilion. According to Providence District Supervisor Linda Smyth, a previous property owner envisioned a park there even before Tysons began undergoing its transformation.

The developer is also planning a synthetic turf field off site on Boone Boulevard near the intersection with Gallows Road. The field will include lighting, bleachers, storage facilities and at least 25 parking spaces.

Along with the approval for The Mile, the Board of Supervisors allowed the development's first building to move forward with construction. It is a seven-story apartment building tentatively called Exley. It will have up to 435 units and ground-floor retail and be located on Westbranch Drive near the intersection with Westpark Drive. The development will join Highgate, a luxury apartment building on Jones Point Drive finished in 2017.
